The Element of Crime
A scenography that represents the thriller: The Element of Crime (1984) from Lars von Trier. The main idea was to translate the story into the sensations felt while watching the movie. The result was an experience of living the story by the senses.
The movie tells the story of detective Fisher who is called to track down a copycat from his previous case: a serial killer called Lotto Murderer. To pursue the killer he uses a method created by his mentor, which requires the detective to identify himself with the killer’s mind. By doing so, his behavior changes.
In the movie, the atmosphere is severe, with dark and humid spaces illuminated by a punctual yellowish moving light. The sense of time and space disappears. The feelings that emerged were anxiety, mystery and confusion.
The concept of this instalation was to offer the visitor the possibility to enter in a scene from the movie, while the story was told by feelings and sensations.
This scenography was developed during a IMIAD (International Master of Interior Architectural Design) workshop.
