Promoting Interaction - Shared Living

An army storage facility has to be refurbished and transformed for a cohousing community. The core of this project is social living. The idea is to integrate the social living into every day life and consequently increase the interaction among residents. The comon areas become an extension of the private apartments.

The building combines residential apartments and hostel rooms with common areas like ateliers, a kitchen, a library, and spaces for exhibitions. It is the perfect place for young families. Some of the apartments are reserved for temporary residents. There are 12 permanent and 5 temporary apartments. The integrated hostel has 24 beds.

The apartments are located at the sides while the center is reserved for common areas. A system of bridges connects the two areas and allows spontaneous encounters. Due to openings on every floor and skylights in the roof, natural light reaches all floors.

This project has won an award at the GIDE (Group for International Design Education) conference in 2013 in Ljubljana.
